The Details
What is Kiva?
Kiva is a non profit organization that has taken the Microfinance concept, popularized by Nobel Prize winner Mohammed Yunus, and harnessed the power of the Internet in a way that allows everyday people to make a direct impact on the lives of others across the globe. By visiting the Kiva website at www.kiva.org you can make loans to the working poor in developing nations all over the world with as little as $25. In order to make this process work, Kiva partners with over 95 local Microfinance Organizations (MFIs) across the globe.
Who am I?
My name is Drew Loizeaux and I am serving as a fellow with Kiva.org. My job as a Kiva Fellow is to work with these partners and help them do all that Kiva requires. I am currently working at one of Kiva's partners in the Philippines called ASKI.
What is ASKI?
Alalay Sa Kaunlaran Inc. (ASKI) is a non-profit MFI in the Philippines, which has been in operation for twenty-one years. ASKI’s goal in the community goes much further than just providing loans to the working poor in the Philippines; they care about their clients and provide a wide range of services to them. These programs include scholarships, health insurance, life Insurance, marketing training, financial training and community development programs.
How a little help can go a long way…
ASKI is very new to the Kiva model and, although everyone here is working diligently to get as many loans on to the site as possible, we’re unable post enough loans on the Kiva site to reach our limit. In order to reach our expansion goals ASKI must start using Kiva in 10 more branches. Computers are required in each branch as Kiva is an online, computer-based platform. Kiva was kind enough to donate half of the computers necessary however we still need 5 more to complete our expansion.
The computers we are seeking to purchase for these branches are netbooks, or very small, cheap laptops. We can get these locally for $300 each so our total goal is $1,500. Any contribution that you can provide towards meeting this goal will be greatly appreciated not only by the staff here at ASKI but also by the many people who will be given a chance to help themselves through the loans these computers allow ASKI to provide in the months and years to come.
Donate!
Donations can be made through the ChipIn icon on the left hand side of this site. Check back often for detailed updates on computers purchased and the affects they have had on getting ASKI loans funded on Kiva.
If you have any questions please leave a message in the comment section below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
